‘Money’ or 'Meaning', What Will You Choose?

This is the question that we often ask in life.

From my experience, the answer may vary from each person. One person may answer differently in each period of their lifetime.

Today, I am going to share the concept from the book “Design Your Work Life.”

Money and meaning are the measurements of values. There is no need to choose between the two. It is possible to have both of them at the same time.

Another question that people frequently ask is ‘What do you make?’

In the business world, most people use the money to measure the value of their creativity. People who are labeled as successful are those who can make the most money.

In the non-profitable world e.g., social organization, the social impact- the ability to make a difference to society and the world, is used as an indicator of success.

Whether you know it or not, you always have your own set of life measurements.

There exists another measurement that we rarely talk about, which is ‘expression’.

Expression enables you to see whether your actions respond to your own identity. Do what you do resonate with your identity, or make you happy?

You might be accustomed to living a life based on money or meaning but we often ignore ‘expression’.

“Do the things you do reflects who we are?”

For some, happiness can be doing things that express their own identity. This can be giving oral presentations, making beautiful slides, presenting ideas, or singing the song they love. They can be happy even though they do not make money from it.

Come back to yourself and find your right mix between ‘Money’, ‘Impact’, and ‘Expression’.
